A Pooja Nariyal (sacred coconut) is a semi-husked, mature coconut used in Hindu rituals, symbolizing purity, divinity, and the sacrifice of the human ego. Often termed Shrifal (God’s fruit), it is used for Kalash Sthapana, weddings, and housewarmings, acting as a divine offering and representing the Hindu trinity.
Key Description & Characteristics
- Appearance: A mature brown coconut with most of the fibrous husk removed, but a small portion of husk is often left at the top.
- Symbolism: The three dark spots (“eyes”) are believed to represent Lord Shiva’s eyes. It is seen as a replacement for old practices of animal sacrifice, offering a sattvic (pure) alternative.
- Components: Inside, it contains water (representing wealth) and a firm kernel (representing food/sustenance).
- Usage: It is placed on a kalash, broken during ceremonies to represent the destruction of the ego, or given as a gift to guests.
