A brown, hairy coconut (known in Hindi as Jata wala Nariyal or Bhoora Nariyal) is the mature version of the coconut, which has a fibrous outer husk. Unlike tender (green) coconuts, this type is not primarily consumed for its water but for its firm, dry, and white kernel (flesh).
Here is a description of the brown, hairy coconut without water (or low water):
- Appearance: The outer layer is brown, thick, and fibrous, with a rough, “hairy” texture.
- Water Content: As the coconut matures, the water inside is absorbed to form the thick, white meat. Therefore, a fully mature “jata wala” coconut usually has very little to no water inside.
- The “Meat” (Giri): It contains a thick, hard, and creamy-white layer of flesh.
- Uses: Because of its mature, dry nature, it is ideal for cooking, grating, making coconut chutney, dry coconut snacks, sweets, or extracting oil.
- How to Identify: When shaken, a dry, mature coconut without much water will not make a sloshing sound, or it will feel much lighter compared to a green, watery one.
